Itinerary

Pompeii

The driver will pick you at the agreed meeting point and he will head to the Archeological site of Pompeii. Once inside you’ll immediately be involved in an incredible atmosphere:  like a time machine you’ll go back in the past in an authentic Roman daily life.

You’ll cross the major artery in Pompeii flanked by Tavernas, Shops and where people spent their time for eating and drinking. A life-style not so different from ours! A must to see are the Baths,   the remains of the Forum, the Theaters and the Graffiti scratched on the walls. Very emotional is the moment when you’ll see the bodies of the inhabitants of Pompeii, the so called plaster casts stuck in the last moment of their life.

Herculaneum

The tour will go on with the second visit of Herculaneum, smaller than Pompeii but affected by the same destiny. Closer to the Mount Vesuvius, it was tragically submerged in a sea of mud that preserved a large part of  items and organic materials. At the entrance you’ll cross the ancient shoreline where people died in a effort to escape death. Going ahead, in the centre of the site you’ll find the Samnite House, the oldest home in the town the House of the Wooden Partition  that’s a significant example of the Roman house. Crossing the main street the Decumano Maximo you’ll see several Thermopolia that are commercial establishments with  very singular counters embellished with slabs of marble. A very famous house considered the symbol of Herculaneum is the House of Neptune and Amphitrite that houses a wonderful colored glass tiles mosaic that  decorates the nymphaeum.

The Women’s Baths are finely decorate with mosaic floor and they still preserve all the original elements. After visiting Herculaneum the driver will lead you back to the starting point.

A group of four of us took a tour of Pompeii and Herculaneum with Ilaria Montuori in mid-April 2017 and it was a complete joy from start to finish. Apart from clearly being very knowledgeable, Ilaria is also a lovely person to be with and it soon felt as though she were just another friend in our group (one who just happens to be an expert historian).

It was such an advantage to be taken away from the hordes of people and to find ourselves in brilliant locations but pretty much on our own. Of course, there were times when we had to be part of the crowd because certain things are unmissable, but Ilaria used her judgement to avoid the hustle and bustle whenever possible.

It’s obvious that she cares a lot about the sites we visited and on more than one occasion she gently but firmly told off other tourists for not behaving appropriately (leaning on frescoes, using flash photography, that sort of thing). But in no way is she stuffy and uptight, far from it, she’s relaxed, has a sense of humour and her English is excellent.

Deciding to hire a guide undoubtedly made our visits to these spectacular places so much richer than if we’d relied on our own research and guide books. It left us free to enjoy our surroundings while listening to a seemingly inexhaustible supply of information from Ilaria, who also welcomed our questions and queries. What a luxury.

We wouldn’t hesitate to recommend Ilaria to anyone considering hiring a guide to Pompeii and/or Herculaneum.
