You will experience a local train crossing the Bay of Naples with your guide and from the train station of Ercolano the Archaeological site is at a distance of 10 minutes walk. Smaller than Pompeii, the Ancient Herculaneum was considered the summer retreat of Roman Patricians. The guide will pick the most representative houses and buildings to give you a new insight into Roman society, family life, diet, and health.

Since the beginning the visitors will notice the effects of the disaster: a huge plateau of mud and lava still rings the Ancient town and it is well known that 75% of it is still underground. Crossing this huge plateau you will see the Ancient shore of Herculaneum where archaeologists found just few years ago the skeletons of the victims.

Getting to the center of the town and according to the openings of the buildings that can change over the year, you’ll be able to visit the Samnite House the oldest estates of Herculaneum, the house of the Wooden Partition that is one of the most beautiful examples of Roman house. On the way for the main road called Decumano Maximo you will meet a weird building that is a kind of restaurant called Thermopolium with an original counter embellished in colored marbles. A must to see is the mosaic of the House of Neptune and Amphitrite that is considered the symbol of Herculaneum together with a huge number of carbonized wood such as wooden beams, furniture and frames. The Women’s Baths of Herculaneum offer the finest mosaics and decorations of the entire site

The tour takes 2 hours after that with your guide you’ll go back to the train station for the second visit: Pompeii.

More famous than Herculaneum and definitely bigger, Pompeii is a proper Roman town. Thanks to the new restoration works you will be able to visit new houses and if you are good walkers your guide will show you places off the beaten paths.

Affected by the same eruption in 79AD Pompeii is a clear pictures of  what life was like 2,000 years ago.

This tour includes the visit of the area dedicated to the Theatres where Pompeiians where used to perform. The Odeion, the small theatre in particular is extremely well preserved and the original decoration are still intact.

During the tour your guide will show you how to recognize the signs of the daily life of Pompeii: the Graffiti scratched on the walls, the stepping stones for crossing the roads, the electoral posters.

According to the openings the visit continues in the private houses like that of Cryptoportico or the House of Menander, where you can hear the echoes of the daily life and you can feel the presence of the Pompeiians in everything they left. The main square of the town is called Forum, the hub of Roman life: crossing this rectangular area you will get to the Forum Holitorium, the commercial market place mainly devoted to the storage and sale of vegetables, herbs, oil and legumes where you will meet the first plaster casts. On the way you will visit the Baths that retain much of the original decoration and stuccoes. For a couple of hours you may be able to feel as if you are in Pompeii with its ancient inhabitants!

At the end of the tour you can decide to spend more time on your own in Pompeii or the guide will lead you back where you met.

We found Ilaria by looking through reviews on TripAdvisor. And all the rave reviews were spot on! We toured Pompeii and Heraculum with Ilaria and she brought such insight into the history and the social structure and lives of the people who lived here 2000 years ago. She managed to keep us away from some of the more crowded streets/buildings and Pompeii can be VERY crowded. Worth the splurge to have a private guide to really experience this historical and fascinating site. And Ilaria is the best. Excellent English also.

We four Australians visited Pompeii and Herculaneum on Wednesday 5 October 2016. Our driver had arranged Ilaria as our guide – and introduced her as “the queen of guides”. The accolade was well deserved. Ilaria was indeed, patient, extremely knowledgeable (no question stumped her) and passionate in her enthousiasm. Read up a little before hand, and make the most of a rare opportunity to be shown around by an expert who knows, cares and can explain in depth. Bravo Ilaria.
